1977 GIRLS' SOCCER

TEAM

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2011

The very first varsity girls' soccer team at Steinert, the 1977 edition, was a smashing success. On the way to a 14-0 record, Steinert outscored its opposition 100-13. Led by co-captains Luanne Christiano and Linda Morgan, who scored 38 and 14 goals respectively, the Spartans won every game except one by two goals or more. A sophomore-dominated team, Steinert still recorded six shutouts as it allowed an average of less than a goal a game.

Suiting up for that inaugural team were four seniors: Luanne Christiano, Debbie Rivera, Diane Ganci and Elaine Habres; four juniors: Linda Morgan, Brenda Coleman, Carol Ann Tarr and Ella Banning; and 10 sophomores: Claudia Metzger, Diane Barnes, Karen Bardzak, Carol Castor, Nancy Sabol, Carol Guyermelli, Kim Oliver, Judi Maher, Dot Picatagi and Eileen Gunson. Bob Pivovarnick coached the fledgling program and later led Steinert into statewide prominence.
