1986 SOFTBALL TEAM

TEAM

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2012

Led by unanimous Coach of the Year Jean Philpet, assistant coach Bob Hutchinson, and senior co-captains Sylvia Scozzari and Lynn Cicchetti, the 1986 Spartan softball team won the Central Jersey Group III championship, the first such title in Steinert High School history.

Highlights for the team comprised of six seniors, five juniors, five sophomores and two freshmen are an 11-game winning streak and seven shutout victories. The Spartans yielded just one run as they held three of their four opponents scoreless on the road to the state championship.

Steinert went 21-6 with half of their losses coming by one run. The Mercer County Tournament champions scored an impressive 210 runs. Scozzari (21 RBI, 10 extra-base hits), Jennie Trombino (a .578 on-base percentage), Kim Drager (.384 batting average, 11 RBI), Kathy Dziedzic (.397 batting average) and Tara Eubanks (.485 batting average, 23 RBI) were All-Mercer County first-team selections. Jeannette Michal and Daneen Zeno were named to the all-county second team.

Although the season did not start out on the right foot as Steinert dropped its first two contests, the Spartans quickly turned things around with Michal, a first-year varsity pitcher, hurling a two-hitter and setting a school record with 13 strikeouts. Key moments that followed for the Spartans included a 5-0 victory over No. 1-seeded Voorhees for the state sectional title and a 5-1 win over neighboring rival Nottingham for the MCT crown. Three of the team’s six seniors (Scozzari, Cicchetti and Trombino) won two MCT titles during their playing days at Steinert.

Joining seniors Scozzari (first base), Cicchetti (outfield), Trombino (shortstop), Karen Hart (designated hitter), Zeno (second base) and Kathy Lichtfus (outfield) on the roster were juniors Drager (third base), Eubanks (outfield), Michal (pitcher), Lisa Henry (catcher) and Tracy Kowalski (pitcher), along with sophomores Dziedzic (outfield), Danelle Wilson (outfield), Joy Clark (designated hitter), Lynette Astbury (first base) and Rose Cesaro (third base). Freshmen Michelle Durfee (second base) and Laura Cesaro (catcher) rounded out the roster.
