1988 BOYS' SOCCER TEAM

TEAM

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2013

The 1988 Spartans compiled a record of 23-1-1 and were CVC Champions, NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III Champions and NJSIAA Group III State Champions. They shut out their opponents in 16 games and outscored their opponents 74-10.

During the early part of the season they struggled to score goals -- but they hung in, stayed close and pulled out victories and grew as a team. Players learned their roles, gained more confidence, grew as a team and got better with each game. The captains and others kept the team focused under the coaches’ pressure and pushed them to play better. The strength of the team was up the middle -- solid in the nets, exceptionally strong in the back, quickly adjusting in the middle and very able up front. The seniors and returning letterwinners were going to have to carry the team through the early stages as the "new" guys learned their jobs and they could play more as a team. Winning goals came from all over the team – they always found somebody to ice the game. The 1988 Spartans achieved great success from a superb team effort with a group of kids that bought into the program and learned to play as one. On-field leadership led to team maturity and confidence in one another.

The 1988 Steinert team included Head Coach Paul Tessein, Assistant Coaches Rich Giallella, Tom Buzinski and Jim Giglio and players Marcello Pisapia, Stewart Miller, Mike Rentner, Jeff Riefler, Shawn Zauner, Mike Mix, Tony Sharko Paul Meyer, Stu Whitman, Randy Jacobs, Mark Kavulak, Ralph Schipski, Mike McGrath, Dave Newsham, Matt Crivelli, Bill Adams, Eric Bliefernich, Curvin Miller, Todd Jacobs, Dominic Pisapia and captains Shawn Gardiner, Eric Hastings and Anthony Vigorito.
