JOHN BOWEN

CLASS OF '78

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2006

The high-scoring Bowen was an integral part of the 24-0 championship soccer team, helping the Spartans to a school-record in goals. Bowen also pitched in five of the Spartans’ six state tournament games, and threw shutouts in the final three contests to hurl Steinert to its first baseball title. John also started for the 1975 co-state soccer champions and finished his career with 50 goals. Bowen was a three-time All-County pick by both Trenton papers and the Mercer County coaches, and a three-time All-State selection. He was part of the Newark Star-Ledger’s All-Decade Team. In baseball, Bowen was All-County and All-State two years and was the Trenton Knights of Columbus Baseball Player of the Year.

Bowen went on to be a four-year starter for the Princeton University soccer team, making All-Ivy League, All-New Jersey College and Regional All-American teams three years apiece. He was a member of the U.S. National Under-19 and Under-20 teams, the U.S. Pan American Games Team and the U.S. Olympic Development Team. He also played for the 1981 and 1983 gold and silver medal-winning East teams in the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival. The Philadelphia Fever made John the seventh overall pick in the Major Indoor Soccer League draft, and he was named VFW 3525 Booster Club’s Outstanding Athlete of the Year in 1980.
