DENNIS DESANCTIS

CLASS OF '68

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2010

Dennis DeSanctis stood just under 6-feet tall but utilized tremendous leaping ability, ball handling skills and court savvy to play varsity for two years before going on to a solid college career.

He played for Jim Wilno’s varsity squad and was co-captain in 1966-67 and captain in 1967-68. He earned Honorable Mention All-City as a junior and was first-team All-City in both Trenton papers as a senior. The spunky guard was also second-team All-Delaware Valley as a senior, and honorable mention on The Newark Star-Ledger’s All-State team.

All this was accomplished not by scoring big points – teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Don Hess took care of that – but by leading the team in a gritty manner.

DeSanctis also played JV baseball for a year, but focused on basketball. It paid off as he played for legendary Howie Landa at Mercer County Community College for two seasons. He was a Viking co-captain both years and led the nation in assists in 1969-70.

Dennis moved on to Gardner Webb University and started at point guard for two years. He led GW to an NAIA seventh-place national finish in 1971 and a Final Four berth in 1972. As a senior he was co-captain and won the Karl Neilson Award for hustle and sportsmanship.

After replacing Duke point guard Dick DeVinzio on his team in the Belgium Basketball League, DeSanctis served two seasons as a GW graduate assistant coach. He was invited to an ABA Free Agent camp in 1972.
