JOE GMITTER

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2007



As two-year soccer player, Gmitter was part of two state tournament teams. As a sharp-shooting guard in basketball, he also helped the Spartans make two straight trips to the states after several down years. As a slick fielding shortstop, he could also hit with the best of them during his three years on varsity. During Gmitter’s three seasons, Steinert amassed a 68-19 record, and the Spartans won three consecutive Mercer County Tournament championships. On Steinert’s career charts, Gmitter is first in triples (13) and stolen bases (61), second in hits (120) and total bases (176), fifth in hitting (.417) and doubles (21) and seventh in slugging percentage (.611). Gmitter earned All-County and All-CVC status, and was also named to the Junior Olympic Team in 1987. He was also a standout for Hamilton Post 31 in American Legion baseball, helping it to a state championship in 1987.

After graduation, Gmitter played three seasons for the University of South Carolina before transferring to Rider. Gmitter earned All-American status playing with the Broncs in 1991, and went on to play professional baseball for two seasons in the Milwaukee Brewers organization.
