SCOTT HAWTHORN

CLASS OF '65

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2024

How long has Scott Hawthorn been a runner? "Forever," he says.

He began his running career in 1960, when he would routinely run back and forth between Hamilton Square and Mercerville with his then-mentor Jack Cook, who would eventually become President of Steinert's Class of 1963. Hawthorn jokes that he discovered running before Phil Knight founded Nike and before the book "The Joy of Running" was published.

Although he was not permitted to run with the newly created Varsity Cross Country team because freshmen could not compete at that level at that time, he did train with the squad since there wasn't a frosh program. When he got to run with the varsity, he lettered each year on the cross country and track teams, and he captained both squads. He won numerous cross country meets and mile runs.

Highlights included setting the Steinert Cross Country Course record and knocking 15 seconds off the SHS record in the mile.

Hawthorn received appointments to the United States Air Force Academy from Congressman Frank Thompson and the United States Naval Academy from Senator Harrison Williams. Following those appointments, Scott was heavily recruited by the respective track coaches of both of those service academies. He opted for the rarified air of Colorado where he was a member of the Air Force Academy cross country and track teams.

A highlight there was setting the Air Force Academy record in the half-mile.

Following graduation from the AFA in 1970, Hawthorn was stationed near Boston. He decided to attend law school at night while serving the Air Force during the day. Since 2019, he is retired from his career as the lead attorney for the Printing Division of Canon, but he continues his labor of love as a distance runner.

In the early 1980s, Scott began to run 5- and 10-K races and he has completed multiple marathons (including six times at the prestigious one in Boston) and many other races.

With wife Norma, he has four grown sons. Norma and Scott live in Boca Raton with "Goldie," their rescued German Shepherd. Scott continues to compete in (and win his age group) in local running events in Florida, and after a 15-year hiatus, is considering a possible return to the Boston Marathon.
