RICH HENRIE

CLASS OF '82

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2010

Rich Henrie lettered four times in spring track, three times in winter track and three times in football. Henrie climaxed with a senior season that stamped him as the greatest athlete to throw the discus at Steinert.

He became the first person in school history to win an individual Meet of Champions title when he capped an undefeated spring against New Jersey discus competition by winning the 1982 MOC.

Henrie’s efforts earned him All-America status in discus, as well as first-team All-State by the Star-Ledger and first-team All-County in both the discus and shot put.

He was named Spartan of the Year as a senior and was the Spring Track Most Valuable Player. He was also named Track Athlete of the Year by the Knights of Columbus and the Capital District Track & Field Officials Association for discus and shot.

En route to his MOC title, Henrie won discus titles in the Mercer County Championship (a throw of 175-9), Central Jersey Group IV (172-10) and NJSIAA Group IV (180-10). For good measure, he won the Bernards Invitational and was part of Steinert’s winning discus relay team in the Mercer County, Don Bosco and New Jersey state discus relays. Rich also teamed to win the shot put relay in the Mercer and Bosco relays. As a shot putter, he “only” took second in the Group IV meet with a throw of 57-9.

When Rich left Steinert, he owned the school record in discus with a 184-9, which was the best throw in the Eastern U.S. that year. He also owned the indoor shot put record of 57-9, and had a personal best of 177-8 in the javelin.
