When Napolitano arrived on varsity as a sophomore in 1971, the Spartans won the third of their four
Group IV state championships. In 1973, Napolitano led Steinert to a fourth state title as New Jersey’s
dominant player. Napolitano was named NJ and Mercer County Player of the year as a senior, and was
also cited as the Kent AA Soccer Scholastic Athlete of the Year. His talents stretched beyond the
Garden State, as Napolitano also earned All-America honors. Art was a three-time All-State and
All-County selection in soccer. He graduated with a school-record 52 career goals. Napolitano’s
soccer prowess overshadowed his stellar baseball skills, as he was All-County twice on the diamond
and All-State once.
Napolitano went on to star at Hartwick. Hartwick won the national title in Napolitano’s
senior year (when Art earned All-Region and All-America honors), and finished third-place nationally
two other seasons. After college, Napolitano played five years professionally with the Major Indoor
Soccer League, and was part of the MISL All-Star Tour of Haiti in 1980. He also played two years in
the North American Soccer League. He went on the USA Olympic/National Team Korean Tour in 1979.
Now living in Bordentown, Napolitano is a member of the Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame.
