SAM STEINERT

CLASS OF '67

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2010

Sam Steinert excelled from 1964-67 at the school named for his great-grandfather.

Steinert earned all-state acclaim as he helped the Spartans to a perfect football season in 1966 which was the first Steinert football team to post a winning record, and remains the only football team in SHS history to go undefeated. He says he benefited from the high quality of his teammates and coaches. "Whatever honors I got, it all stems off of that team," said Steinert, who was named first-team all-state by the UPI and AP wire services. "This would’ve never happened without them."

"My senior year, we were good," he said. "The offense we ran, it highlighted certain guys and one of them was me. I was a fast, light offensive guard that knew how to use his nose. Pound for pound, I could hold my own with most."

While rolling to a 9-0 record, the ’66 Spartans only allowed three touchdowns for a total of 19 points against as they became the lone Group IV team in New Jersey to go undefeated and untied that year.
