JAKE TARR

COACH

YEAR OF INDUCTION: 2008

Known as much for his sharp wit as his ability to lead teams, Tarr was synonymous with Steinert Athletics in the 1960’s and 70’s. Tarr was a star athlete for Hamilton in the late 1940’s, earning All-City in soccer, baseball and basketball and All-State in basketball and baseball. He was in the HHW Hall of Fame’s first induction class. Jake served in the US Army for three years and graduated from Duke University, where he earned All-Conference in soccer and baseball.

He played in the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City A’s organizations before arriving at Steinert in 1960, where he proceeded to coach JV soccer and varsity baseball and basketball. In basketball, Tarr coached three SHS teams setting a then-school record for victories in 1972-73 when the Spartans won the Central Jersey Group IV title. Tarr moved up Klockner Road to teach and coach at Nottingham for several years before retiring in 1992.
